The Canadian short track speed skating team excelled on the first day of the second World Tour event in Montreal, securing four gold medals. Local favorite William Dandjinou clinched two individual victories, including the men’s 500 meters with a time of 41.126 seconds. Dandjinou took the lead after a restart due to a false start by Dutch competitor Jens Van’T Wout, ultimately winning the race.
In the men’s 1,500 meters, Dandjinou, the reigning overall champion, claimed another gold medal in 2:13.217. Fellow Canadian Félix Roussel initially finished second but was penalized, allowing Steven Dubois to move up to third place.
Courtney Sarault continued her winning streak by securing a gold medal in the women’s 1,000 meters, clocking a time of 1:27.896. Sarault also played a crucial role in helping Canada win the women’s 3,000 meters relay alongside Kim Boutin, Danaé Blais, and Florence Brunelle.
The Canadian team redeemed themselves with a gold in the relay event after a disappointing bronze finish the previous weekend. The event saw Sarault leading the team to victory after a strong final exchange.
Sunday’s medal rounds can be watched live on CBCSports.ca and CBC Gem. The upcoming stops on the tour include Poland and the Netherlands, with the world championships scheduled to take place in Montreal in March.
