A resident from the Greater Toronto Area recently achieved victory at the World Jigsaw Puzzle Championship within the over 60 category, marking the first Canadian to accomplish this feat.
Vicki Richardson, who has had a fondness for puzzles since her youth, attributed her passion for puzzle-solving to the moments spent with her father deciphering pieces together. Little did she know that years later, she would be representing Canada in a puzzle championship held in Spain.
Expressing her pride in standing on the podium as a Canadian, Richardson described the experience as thrilling and almost surreal during her interview with CBC Radio’s “Metro Morning” on Thursday.
After setting puzzles aside in her late teens to focus on education and family, Richardson rediscovered her love for puzzle-solving upon retiring in April 2023. Joining the Canadian Jigsaw Puzzle Association, she embarked on this journey alongside her daughter, also passing down the art of puzzles to her grandchildren.
Participating in the World Jigsaw Puzzle Championship in Valladolid, Spain, Richardson emphasized the demanding nature of the event, which brings together numerous speed puzzlers for timed competitions. She completed a 500-piece puzzle designed exclusively for the championship, finishing it in just over an hour to secure international recognition.
Despite the achievement, Richardson aims to improve her speed, mentioning her ability to solve 500-piece puzzles in 40 minutes due to extensive practice and repetition of various puzzle types.
Acknowledging her mother’s championship win, Tracy Nonomura expressed immense pride in Richardson’s dedication and hard work, recalling fond memories of puzzle-solving moments shared within the family.
Reflecting on the positive impact of puzzles on cognitive abilities, Richardson’s sharp mind post-retirement aligns with research from psychology professor Lixia Yang, emphasizing the benefits of age-appropriate mental exercises like jigsaw puzzles in maintaining cognitive functions as individuals age.
Yang encourages maintaining an active mindset regardless of age, emphasizing that engaging activities contribute positively to the aging process.
