“Carney Urges Prompt Execution of US Peace Deal in Israel-Hamas Conflict”

Date:

Prime Minister Mark Carney is urging for a prompt execution of the initial phase of the peace agreement proposed by the United States between Israel and Hamas, as per the recent announcement of a deal late on Wednesday. President Donald Trump stated that the terms involve Hamas releasing all remaining Israeli captives and Israel withdrawing its troops to a mutually agreed line.

Carney commended Trump and representatives from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey for their efforts in achieving this first milestone. Expressing relief over the imminent reunion of the hostages with their families, Carney emphasized the significance of attaining peace after prolonged suffering. Canada is urging all parties to expeditiously adhere to the agreed terms and strive towards establishing a fair and enduring peace.

If implemented, the agreement would represent a significant advancement in bridging the gap between the conflicting parties, surpassing previous attempts to cease a war that has escalated into a regional crisis. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre also lauded the U.S. president for his pivotal role in advancing generational peace and hoped for the safe return of hostages and an end to the violence, paving the way for sustainable peace.

Carney disclosed earlier that he had engaged with key figures involved in Trump’s peace initiative, namely former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, within the past 48 hours. Canada is collaborating closely with Gulf and Arab nations to support the U.S. in implementing the 20-point peace plan outlined by the president.

Trump unveiled the plan proposing a ceasefire, exchange of hostages, gradual Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, Hamas disarmament, and the establishment of an interim government overseen by an international body. Blair is expected to be part of the envisioned “board of peace” providing oversight during the ceasefire implementation, while Kushner is actively involved as one of the president’s envoys in the negotiation process.

Despite the progress in reaching the initial phase of the deal, uncertainties persist regarding the governance of Gaza post-conflict resolution. Netanyahu, Trump, and various Western and Arab states have dismissed Hamas’s involvement in the governance, leading to conflicting viewpoints on the future administration of Gaza. While the plan is supported by Arab nations advocating for Palestinian statehood, Netanyahu remains firm on opposing it. Meanwhile, Israel’s military operations in Gaza continue, causing extensive damage in the region.

Gaza authorities report a significant number of casualties since the commencement of Israel’s military response to the Palestinian militant group’s attack two years ago. Israeli officials confirm casualties and hostages taken back to Gaza, with a portion still being held captive. Israel has scaled back its military actions following Trump’s directive but has not completely ceased operations.
