Welcome to the Canadian Basketball Summer season, where fans can indulge in a plethora of exciting basketball events. The Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) is entering its eighth season, and the WNBA’s Toronto Tempo is set to kick off their debut campaign.
While the Tempo will be playing in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver, the CEBL boasts nationwide coverage with 10 teams representing six provinces. The league has evolved significantly since its inception, introducing target-score endings, also known as Elam Endings, where every game concludes with a made basket. Additionally, this season’s championship series will feature a best-of-three format, with the lower seed hosting Game 1 before the team with the better record hosts Games 2 and 3.
The action commences on Saturday with the Edmonton Stingers hosting the Winnipeg Sea Bears in the season opener. Live coverage will be available at 3:30 p.m. ET on CBC-TV and CBC Gem, serving as the official home of the CEBL throughout the season.
Teams will play 24 games each during the regular season, with the top four teams from each conference advancing to the playoffs. The post-season format includes single-elimination matchups, with the winners progressing to face off in another one-game knockout, leading to the final showdown.
The Niagara River Lions, the two-time defending champions, will aim for a historic three-peat under new leadership as Kimbal Mackenzie transitions to head coach. Star player Khalil Ahmad, a standout in the league with multiple accolades, remains a crucial asset for the team.
Among the contenders, the Vancouver Bandits stand out as a formidable force despite their title drought, while the Sea Bears and the newly revamped Brampton Honey Badgers, with the addition of Mark Cuban to their ownership group, are poised for strong showings.
The league showcases Canadian talent, with notable players like Tyrese Samuel, Rugzy Miller-Moore, Quincy Guerrier, Simon Hildebrandt, and Charles Bediako making significant contributions to their respective teams. Import player Xavier Moon’s return to the Sea Bears adds a compelling narrative to the Western Conference competition.
