Climate Change Report Reveals Minimal Impact, Urgency Ahead

Date:

This year, all nations were tasked with submitting enhanced strategies to combat climate change. However, a recent report from the United Nations reveals that these strategies have had minimal impact on curbing the future warming of the planet. The withdrawal of the United States from this initiative has further hindered progress, as highlighted in the report.

The latest climate action plans, required every five years under the 2015 Paris Agreement, are estimated to reduce future warming by approximately 0.3 degrees Celsius compared to previous projections. Surprisingly, only a third of the countries that are signatories to the agreement, representing 63% of global emissions, have submitted updated climate plans.

Canada presented its most recent climate plan in February, which has been deemed “highly insufficient” by the non-profit organization Climate Action Tracker. Despite setting targets for emission reductions, Canada is falling short of its goals, with forecasts indicating a significant gap between projected and targeted reductions.

A recent report from the Institut de l’énergie Trottier at Polytechnique Montreal underscores the need for coordinated policy adjustments to transition towards a net-zero energy system this year.

Ross Linden-Fraser, a research lead at the Canadian Climate Institute, acknowledged Canada’s progress in target setting but pointed out the lack of follow-through on commitments. He emphasized the importance of the federal budget in ensuring the implementation of these commitments.

On the other hand, the U.S. administration’s policies, including the rollback of environmental regulations and obstruction of green energy projects, are projected to contribute an additional 0.1 degrees Celsius of warming, as per the UN Environment Program’s Emissions Gap report.

The rise in global average temperature is primarily attributed to the release of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels. To address this, countries must outline detailed plans on how they will swiftly reduce emissions of these gases.

If countries adhere to their proposed climate actions, the planet is expected to warm by 2.3 to 2.5 degrees Celsius, surpassing the internationally agreed-upon goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius set in Paris. Current policies indicate a trajectory towards 2.8 degrees Celsius of warming, underscoring the urgency of the upcoming UN climate discussions in Belem, Brazil.

Despite efforts to rapidly reduce emissions from fossil fuels, global temperatures are likely to increase by at least 1.7 degrees Celsius this century, with subsequent measures required to reverse this trend.

UNEP executive director Inger Andersen emphasized the need for accelerated progress in combating climate change, stressing the importance of swift action.

Lastly, it is noted that the U.S.’s decision to exit the Paris Agreement significantly alters the global emissions landscape. Prior to this withdrawal, the U.S. had pledged substantial emissions reductions, which are now in jeopardy due to policy shifts.

The UN estimates that the rest of the world must collectively reduce an additional two billion tonnes of carbon dioxide annually to compensate for the projected increase in American emissions. To meet the objectives of limiting warming, global emissions need to be reduced from 57.7 billion tonnes to around 33 billion tonnes per year.

Experts highlight the lack of political will as a hindrance to achieving emission reduction targets, calling for urgent and decisive action from world leaders to address climate change effectively.

Despite the concerning findings of the report, there remains an opportunity for leaders to take bold steps to mitigate emissions, leading to economic benefits and improved public health. The upcoming UN climate talks are viewed as a critical moment for global climate action.
