Cloudflare Resolves Outage Impacting ChatGPT and League of Legends

Date:

An Internet infrastructure company that is widely used announced that it has successfully resolved an issue causing outages affecting users of various services such as ChatGPT, the online game League of Legends, and the social media platform X on Tuesday.

Cloudflare, a content delivery network offering network and security solutions to internet service providers, reported on its status page that its engineers no longer observed the issues affecting its clients but were still monitoring for any potential further issues.

The problems commenced on Tuesday morning. By 9:42 a.m. ET, the company confirmed that a solution had been implemented, stating, “We believe the incident is now resolved. We are continuing to monitor for errors to ensure all services are functioning normally.”

In a post on X, Cloudflare’s chief technology officer, Dane Knecht, acknowledged that the company had let down its customers and the broader internet but clarified that the problem did not result from a cyberattack.

Although the fix had been deployed, the company mentioned that some users might still encounter difficulties with Cloudflare services. Earlier on Tuesday, there were numerous reports of 500 errors and issues with the Cloudflare Dashboard and API.

The outage appeared to hinder thousands of users from accessing platforms like Canva, Grindr, Spotify, Coinbase, and Moody’s credit rating services, which displayed an Error Code 500 on its homepage, directing individuals to visit Cloudflare’s website for more information.

New Jersey Transit indicated that parts of its digital services might be temporarily inaccessible or slow to load, while New York City Emergency Management reported that city services were being impacted by the outage.

In France, the website of the national railway company SNCF was also affected. The company informed customers that some information and schedules might not be available or up to date, assuring that their teams were working to restore these services promptly.

What is Cloudflare?

Headquartered in San Francisco, Cloudflare operates behind the scenes to enhance the speed and security of the internet. However, when issues arise, it can cause significant digital congestion for internet users, according to cybersecurity expert Mike Chapple.

Chapple, an information technology professor at the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business, explained that despite most people thinking there is a direct connection between their device and a website, companies like Cloudflare actually mediate those connections.

Cloudflare serves as a “content delivery network” that replicates content from 20% of the world’s websites on thousands of servers globally, Chapple added.

“When you visit a website protected by Cloudflare, your device does not connect directly to that site,” Chapple noted.

“Instead, it connects to the nearest Cloudflare server, which could be in close proximity to your location. This shields the website from excessive traffic and offers you a quicker response. It’s beneficial for all parties until a failure occurs, causing 20% of the internet to go down simultaneously.”

Several cybersecurity experts have long cautioned about the potential risks of relying heavily on a few major tech firms to underpin the infrastructure of the online world.

In the recent past, Microsoft had to address an outage of its Azure cloud portal that prevented users from accessing Office 365, Minecraft, and other services. The tech giant stated on its Azure status page that the outage resulted from a configuration change to its Azure infrastructure.

Similarly, Amazon faced a significant outage of its cloud computing service in October, affecting a wide range of online services, including social media, gaming, food delivery, streaming, and financial platforms. Although the company resolved the issue, it caused substantial disruptions.

CBC News contacted Cloudflare for a statement. A spokesperson disclosed that the company observed an increase in “unusual traffic” to one of Cloudflare’s services on Tuesday morning and mentioned that a detailed analysis of the incident would be provided at a later time.
