The residents of Cerne Abbas hold a strong affection for the iconic giant figure carved into the hillside overlooking their village in Dorset, England. However, recent mild and wet winters have caused the 55-meter chalk figure to become overgrown with grass and algae, obscuring its distinct white lines. To address this issue, over 100 volunteers from the National Trust in the U.K. have been diligently working to restore the Cerne Abbas Giant to its original grandeur, enduring challenging weather conditions in the process.
Liz Flight, the senior visitor experience officer at the National Trust, described the painstaking efforts required for the restoration work, emphasizing the community’s deep attachment to the figure.
This mysterious figure is one of several hillside figures found throughout the U.K., with origins dating back centuries. Although previously believed to be of Roman origin, a 2001 analysis by the National Trust revealed that the giant actually dates back to the late Saxon period, between 700 and 1100 AD.
Maintaining the hill figure is a priority for the National Trust, with regular touch-ups typically done every decade. Flight explained the delicate balance required to preserve the giant while protecting the surrounding archaeological landscape. This current restoration marks the fourth re-chalking of the figure and is ahead of schedule due to the impact of recent warmer winters promoting grass and algae growth.
Volunteers are actively working to remove grass, clear old chalk deposits, and replace them with fresh white chalk rocks to refresh the giant’s appearance. Despite challenges like hot weather affecting work hours, Flight praised the dedication of the volunteers and highlighted the sense of pride in contributing to the figure’s preservation.
