Conservative MP DeRidder Firmly Rejects Liberal Party Offer

Date:

An Ontario Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) from Kitchener Centre, Kelly DeRidder, has stated that she has no intentions of switching parties despite a recent attempt by the Liberal Party to persuade her to do so. DeRidder shared that she received a call from the Liberal Party, emphasizing that joining their ranks could enhance her chances of winning the upcoming election. However, DeRidder firmly rejected the offer, emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability in government during an interview with CBC News and in a video posted on Facebook.

The Liberal Party has been actively seeking new members, with several Conservative MPs defecting to their side in recent months, resulting in the Liberals holding the majority of seats in the House of Commons. Prime Minister Mark Carney highlighted the diverse perspectives and expertise brought by the recent floor-crossers, including the most recent defection of MP Marilyn Gladu.

Despite the Liberal Party’s efforts to recruit her, DeRidder stood her ground, declining the offer even after they praised her committee work and expressed interest in her expertise in areas such as artificial intelligence and digital policy. DeRidder revealed that the Liberals suggested it would be challenging for a Conservative candidate to secure victory in the next election in her riding due to potential support from Green Party backers.

The incumbent MP in Kitchener Centre, DeRidder, won the April 2025 federal election, defeating Green Party candidate Mike Morrice by a narrow margin. Morrice, along with Green Party leader Elizabeth May, emphasized the unwavering support of Green voters for his candidacy. DeRidder’s decision to publicly disclose the recruitment attempt and her refusal was motivated by a desire for transparency and to counter the blame being placed on the Conservative Party.

Political science expert Andrea Perrella noted that while party recruitment across party lines is not uncommon, it is rare for individuals to publicly expose such attempts. Perrella highlighted the potential benefits for DeRidder in maintaining her reputation as a loyal Conservative, particularly in a riding like Kitchener Centre, known for its shifting political allegiances.

DeRidder’s decision to reject the Liberal Party’s offer and speak out may resonate with her Conservative base in Kitchener Centre, potentially solidifying support for her candidacy in the next election. This move could prove crucial in a riding like Kitchener Centre, which has a history of swinging between different political parties.
