Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is currently in Ottawa this week, following through on her commitment made a week ago to support the funding of a proposal for a new oil pipeline to Canada’s West Coast. The project, which lacks a private sector backer or a specific route, is anticipated to be ready for submission to Prime Minister Mark Carney’s new Major Projects Office by next spring.
Smith held a meeting with Carney on Monday at the Ottawa airport before his departure to Washington for a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump. Prior to their private discussion, Smith highlighted the challenges Canada faces in advancing major projects, emphasizing the need to find a balance between constructing new energy infrastructure and reducing emissions.
During their interaction, Carney acknowledged the substantial topics on the agenda regarding Canada’s energy potential, hinting at promising opportunities without specifying them. Smith is scheduled to host a press briefing in Ottawa this morning to update on Alberta’s collaboration with the federal government to foster enduring prosperity for Canadians.
She is actively advocating for the repeal of various environmental regulations from the previous administration of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, including the ban on oil tankers along the B.C. coast and emission caps on oil and gas production.
