DFO Minister Joanne Thompson cited her commitment to upholding the Fisheries Act regulations safeguarding marine mammals against exploitation as the basis for her decision. Thompson expressed her concerns about the whales’ deteriorating health due to their captivity and emphasized the importance of acting in the whales’ best interests.
Thompson disclosed during an interview with CBC News that her visit to Marineland had reinforced her belief that whales belong in their natural habitat rather than in captivity. She acknowledged the challenging circumstances surrounding the whales’ future and stated her willingness to consider future permit applications focusing on the well-being of the belugas.
Following the denial of the export permits, reports indicate that Marineland is facing financial difficulties and may file for bankruptcy. An anonymous source revealed that Marineland is contemplating surrendering the whales for euthanasia due to financial constraints. Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed disappointment over the federal government’s decision but emphasized the importance of ensuring the whales’ welfare.
Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in China confirmed its interest in acquiring the belugas, while Marineland Canada, which remained closed this year, began selling off its rides. Despite the uncertain future for the belugas, efforts are being made to explore potential solutions, including discussions on establishing a whale sanctuary. Animal welfare advocates have welcomed the decision to deny the export permits, urging for the whales’ well-being to be prioritized.
