As I mark another significant birthday, the usual apprehension of entering a new decade seems to have eased. Realizing that my past days outnumber my future ones now feels more like a blessing than a threat.
Growing older has revealed itself to be a privilege, despite the common perception of it as a period of decline in both mental and physical capacities. This perspective shifted significantly for me after the untimely passing of my dear friend Natalie at the age of 57, almost a year ago.
Natalie, with her gentle and nurturing demeanor, held a significant place in my life. Our friendship, which began over three decades ago in a university statistics class, transcended physical distances and life’s various milestones. It was characterized by unwavering support, shared laughter, and a loyalty that needed no words.
The loss of Natalie has been profound, but her spirit lives on through the cherished memories shared with her husband and our mutual friend Lorraine. Our bond was so strong that even in her absence, Natalie’s presence was palpable in our conversations and shared experiences.
About a month before Natalie’s passing, my husband and I visited her in Toronto, not explicitly revealing the purpose of our trip. During our time together, she exuded her usual warmth and humor, silently acknowledging the challenges she faced. Her courage in confronting her mortality left a lasting impact on me, inspiring a newfound perspective on aging characterized by gratitude and acceptance.
While acknowledging that fears and uncertainties about aging may linger, I endeavor to emulate Natalie’s resilience and face the future with grace and fortitude. Each day brings its own set of challenges and joys, and I aim to navigate this journey with intention, appreciation for the present moment, and a deep understanding of what truly matters.
As I celebrate my 60th birthday this month, Natalie’s absence serves as a poignant reminder of the beauty in growing older with love, dignity, and cherished friendships. I aspire to live as she did: fully present in each moment, embracing life’s complexities with an open heart.
