“Ford Recalls 600K+ Vehicles Over Trailer Brake Software Glitch”

Date:

Ford is initiating a recall for over 600,000 vehicles in Canada and approximately 4.3 million in the U.S. due to a software problem that could lead to trailer brakes not working and exterior lights failing. The affected vehicles include specific models of Ford’s popular lineup, such as select F-150s from 2021 to 2026, Super Duty trucks from 2022 to 2026, Rangers from 2024 to 2026, and Mavericks from 2022 to 2026.

To address the issue, Ford will provide an over-the-air software update for the impacted vehicles, with customers having the option to receive the update through mobile service or by visiting a Ford dealership. The software update will be accessible for most Canadian vehicles before the end of March and for all vehicles by the end of May.

The software glitch can interrupt communication between the vehicle and the trailer when towing, resulting in the trailer’s stop lamps and turn signals failing to illuminate. Furthermore, there could be instances where the trailer’s braking functionality is compromised. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has highlighted that malfunctioning trailer lights or brakes can hinder the driver’s control over the trailer, escalating the risk of accidents.

In case of communication loss between the vehicle and the trailer, drivers may receive a “Trailer Brake Module Fault” message and notice rapid flashing of the turn signal indicator. Ford has acknowledged around 407 incidents possibly linked to the recall issue, but no accidents or injuries have been reported as a result.
