Voting technology firm Dominion Voting Systems, which has been at the center of conspiracy theories surrounding the 2020 U.S. presidential election, has been acquired by a new company led by a former Republican elections official. The purchase marks a significant shift in events from just over two years ago when Dominion was embroiled in a defamation trial, resulting in a substantial settlement with Fox Corporation and Fox News.
The acquiring company, KnowInk, based in St. Louis and known for its electronic poll books, has rebranded Dominion as Liberty Vote. The move aims to emphasize a commitment to transparent election technology, addressing long-standing concerns raised by election conspiracy theorists.
Former Dominion CEO John Poulos confirmed the acquisition, highlighting that Liberty Vote is now the owner of Dominion Voting Systems. While Poulos retained a stake in the company, private equity firm Staple Street Capital had obtained a controlling interest in a previous deal.
Most voting equipment in the U.S., including Dominion’s products, already incorporates paper-based auditing capabilities. The acquisition has led to the redirection of all internet traffic from Dominion’s former site to libertyvote.com, with a focus on restoring trust in the electoral process.
The sale does not disclose financial details, indicating that the transaction was funded solely by KnowInk. Dominion’s history traces back to its establishment by Poulos and James Hoover following the contentious 2000 U.S. presidential election, which was marred by controversies surrounding paper ballot systems.
Despite the widespread availability of information on Dominion’s technology, the 2020 election saw unfounded allegations and misinformation spread, prompting legal challenges and audits that affirmed the legitimacy of the election results. The acquisition of Dominion and the subsequent rebranding under Liberty Vote aim to introduce enhanced transparency measures and align with recent voting policy directives.
The transition to Liberty Vote underscores a renewed focus on election integrity and aims to address the challenges posed by past misinformation campaigns.
