“Ginkgo Trees’ Stinky Fruit Riles Toronto Residents”

Date:

An increasingly prevalent non-native tree in Toronto is causing concerns among residents. Alan Page and his wife, residents of Leslieville for over two decades, have a ginkgo tree in their backyard that has become a nuisance. The tree now produces sticky and smelly fruit in the autumn, leading to issues with cleanliness and attracting insects like bees and wasps indoors.

Residents, including Page, have sought permission to remove these ginkgo trees due to the offensive odor resembling a mix of dog feces and vomit. However, city forestry staff have been denying removal requests, citing the tree’s value in providing aesthetic, social, and economic benefits to the community.

Councilor Josh Matlow has pushed for creative solutions to address homeowner concerns about the foul-smelling ginkgo fruit. Arborists estimate that thousands of ginkgo trees in Toronto are now reaching maturity, leading to the recent introduction of their malodorous fruit. The city’s tree removal regulations require permits for trees with a diameter of 30 cm or more, with penalties for violations.

Despite efforts to increase the city’s tree canopy to 40% by 2050, concerns about the ginkgo trees persist. Matlow aims to ease tree removal rules specifically related to ginkgo trees, hoping for a resolution by 2027. Neighbors like James Chiu have supported Page in his appeal, highlighting the challenges faced due to the ginkgo tree’s fruit.

If approved for removal, Page is willing to plant five new trees as a replacement. Meanwhile, arborists advise residents to appreciate the benefits of ginkgo trees, such as shade and wildlife habitat, while learning to manage the seasonal inconvenience of the smelly fruit.
