“Golden Knights Acquire Goalie Carter Hart Amid Controversy”

Date:

The Vegas Golden Knights have announced the acquisition of goaltender Carter Hart, a member of Canada’s 2018 world junior hockey team who was recently cleared of sexual assault charges. While details of the agreement were not disclosed, it is reported that Hart has signed a professional tryout agreement with the NHL team.

Although Hart is currently under NHL suspension until December 1, he was allowed to sign with a team starting on Wednesday as he awaits reinstatement. Speaking at the Golden Knights’ facility in Las Vegas, Hart expressed his gratitude and excitement to join the team, emphasizing his desire to showcase his true character and passion for the game of hockey after a long hiatus.

Hart, along with four other players, had faced charges of sexual assault following an incident at a 2018 gala celebrating the Canadian world junior team’s victory. All five players were acquitted on July 24 after a trial in London, Ont. Hart is the first among them to secure a contract with an NHL team, as others have pursued opportunities in different leagues.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman stated that each team will make its own decisions regarding the players’ eligibility, emphasizing the importance of upholding league standards and values. The NHL had deemed the players’ conduct unacceptable, although not criminal, leading to their suspension and subsequent eligibility to re-sign with the league.

Hart, who testified at the trial, detailed his version of events and the consent he believed was given during the encounter. The 27-year-old goalie, hailing from Sherwood Park, Alta., spent six seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers before becoming a free agent. Hart’s move to the Golden Knights was anticipated by sports management experts, citing his potential for a successful comeback in the NHL.

Dan Mason, a sport management professor, noted that Hart’s return to the NHL was expected given his experience in the league. Mason highlighted the league’s decision to allow the acquitted players to continue their careers, providing a level of assurance to teams like the Golden Knights.

The Golden Knights, a top contender for the Stanley Cup, have been rotating goaltenders between Adin Hill and Akira Schmid this season. Hill has faced challenges with his performance, while Schmid has shown promise with strong statistics in his appearances.
