“Guilty Verdict in Burlington Child Death Case”

Date:

An Ontario Superior Court judge has rendered a guilty verdict for Burlington residents Becky Hamber and Brandy Cooney in the tragic case involving the death of a 12-year-old boy and the mistreatment of his younger brother while under their care.

During the proceedings at Milton court on Tuesday morning, the judge swiftly delivered his findings in the murder trial of Brandy Cooney, 44, and Becky Hamber, 46, without elaborating further. The ruling was met with audible reactions from the audience, with Justice Clayton Conlan’s detailed reasoning spanning a 300-page document.

Conlan described how Hamber and Cooney harbored animosity towards the boys, expressing disappointment that the children did not meet their expectations. The couple subjected one of the boys to a confined and deplorable living environment, demonstrating a deliberate intent to harm him.

The sentencing for Hamber and Cooney is pending, scheduled for a later date, potentially in mid-May. The two individuals did not make statements in court and were escorted away by law enforcement after a private consultation with their legal representatives.

The Indigenous brothers, identified as L.L. and J.L., were under the care of Hamber and Cooney, who were prospective adoptive parents. The boys resided with the couple for around five years starting in 2017. Tragically, L.L. passed away on December 21, 2022, under distressing circumstances, with emergency responders discovering him unresponsive in his basement bedroom.

Following L.L.’s demise, J.L. was removed from the couple’s custody by the Children’s Aid Society. Subsequently, on January 17, 2023, Halton police arrested Hamber and Cooney on assault charges, with further accusations of causing L.L.’s death leading to their arrest on February 29, 2024.

The trial, featuring 48 witnesses and 209 exhibits, extensively analyzed various pieces of evidence, including text messages, medical reports, and testimonies from experts, ultimately contributing to the judge’s decision. Conlan highlighted discrepancies in the couple’s testimonies and discredited their defense arguments.

The court session also involved emotional responses from legal representatives and witnesses, underscoring the gravity of the case. The presiding judge praised the efforts of both the defense and the prosecution, emphasizing the weight of the evidence presented.

The judge’s ruling brought closure to a deeply distressing and impactful chapter, with hopes for accountability and justice in the wake of the tragic events. The case has evoked calls for reform within the child protection system, highlighting the need for enhanced safeguards for vulnerable individuals.
