“Iconic ‘Eyeball Rocks’ Along Nova Scotia Highway Set for Removal”

Date:

The iconic pair of boulders painted as eyes along Nova Scotia’s Highway 103 will soon be removed as the province moves forward with highway twinning plans. Originally created by artists Jason Smith and Neil in October 2017, the “eyeball rocks” have become a beloved unofficial landmark along the highway.

The artists, along with their children, painted the rocks after they were exposed during highway clearing. Initially meant to be emojis, the rocks eventually became eyes with pupils. Despite facing some setbacks, such as graffiti and the need for touch-ups, the painted rocks gained popularity over the years.

While the decision to blast the boulders has sparked mixed reactions, with some expressing sadness at their removal, others are hopeful that new artwork may emerge in the future. Gary Andrea, spokesperson for the Department of Public Works, stated that the rocks will be broken up later this month due to safety concerns as construction progresses.

Although saddened by the imminent destruction of the rocks, Jason Smith expressed pride in the joy and laughter the artwork brought to people. He and Neil have decided to step out of anonymity in light of the rocks’ fate, cherishing the memories and impact their creation had on the community.

As the eyes on the rocks prepare to bid farewell, Smith hopes that their legacy of spreading smiles and laughter will live on in the hearts of those who enjoyed them.
