“Israel-Hamas Peace Deal Brokered with U.S. Support”

Date:

Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed optimism as Israel and Hamas reached an agreement on a U.S.-brokered peace plan for Gaza. The deal aims to secure the release of Israeli hostages and bring an end to the conflict. Carney emphasized the importance of Hamas fulfilling its part of the agreement by releasing all hostages, including those who have passed away, taken during the violent attack on Israel in October 2023.

Carney highlighted the critical nature of the next 48 hours during a press briefing on Parliament Hill, praising U.S. President Donald Trump for his efforts in pushing both sides to lay down their arms after years of violence. The agreement, which includes a ceasefire, was achieved with significant pressure from Trump and key Arab mediators.

Acknowledging the contributions of Jared Kushner, Steve Witkoff, and other regional players, Carney mentioned potential future involvement by Canada in supporting the peace process. He mentioned discussions with Kushner and former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair on Canada’s role in the post-conflict governance of Gaza.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand emphasized the urgency of hostage release as the primary focus, with Canada collaborating on the U.S.’s 20-point peace plan. The plan envisions Gaza as a demilitarized zone under international protection, overseen by a peace board chaired by Trump without Hamas involvement.

Anand noted Canada’s substantial commitment to humanitarian aid in Gaza and hinted at possible involvement in a transnational peacekeeping force, pending further discussions. However, uncertainties remain regarding the Canadian Armed Forces’ capacity for additional missions, with ongoing dialogues to determine Canada’s role in securing a lasting ceasefire in Gaza.

Carney’s previous mention of a potential stabilization force involving European and Arab nations indicates Ottawa’s interest in contributing to international efforts for peace and security in the region.
