When approached by the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame to induct Jane Siberry for her exceptional songwriting career, k.d. lang quickly accepted the invitation. Reflecting on Siberry’s profound influence, lang described her as a unique and fearless artist who effortlessly fits among Canada’s distinguished songwriters. lang also humorously suggested that Siberry might be otherworldly due to her exceptional talent.
Siberry’s songs, such as “Mimi on the Beach” and “It Can’t Rain All the Time,” are known for their enigmatic and thought-provoking lyrics that blend specific details with intentional ambiguity. Delving into themes that intertwine the personal, universal, and spiritual realms, Siberry’s music offers deep introspection into the intangible aspects of the human experience.
Comparing Siberry to legendary artist Leonard Cohen, lang praised the way Siberry’s lyrics resonate with listeners, offering a path to self-reflection and compassion without prescribing definitive answers. Lang plans to convey these sentiments to Siberry during the Hall of Fame gala at Toronto’s Meridian Arts Centre.
As part of this year’s Legends Induction Series by the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, Siberry joins other notable inductees like Andy Kim, Gino Vannelli, Ian Thomas, and rock trio Triumph. Initially conflicted about the recognition due to her focus on a new studio album project, Siberry eventually embraced the honor, recognizing it as an opportunity for joy and celebration.
The executive director of the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, Nick Fedor, highlighted the honorees’ embodiment of Canadian songwriting values such as artistic courage, cultural impact, and transcendent storytelling. He emphasized that the Legends Series serves as a platform to honor legacy, inspire future generations, and elevate the significance of songwriters in shaping cultural identity.
Following the ceremonies in Toronto and Montreal, this year’s inductees will have their legacy preserved at the CSHF’s permanent location at Studio Bell in Calgary, home of the National Music Centre. The upcoming event in Montreal will honor songwriting luminaries François Cousineau, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Michel Pagliaro, and Florent Vollant.
