Katie Pegg of Markham Wins Bronze in Para Athletics Shot Put

Date:

Katie Pegg, hailing from Markham, Ontario, achieved a personal best in the women’s shot put event at the Para Athletics World Championships, securing her first medal in her second appearance at the prestigious competition. Pegg’s outstanding performance saw her throw 12.76 meters on her final attempt, clinching the bronze medal with a throw that surpassed her previous mark by eight centimeters at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi. The 21-year-old athlete kicked off the F46 final with an 11.48-meter throw and maintained her composure throughout the competition against ten other competitors.

Reflecting on her achievement, Pegg expressed her joy, stating, “I just went out there, threw a heavy ball really far, and I had fun. I didn’t put too much pressure on myself.” The hard work and dedication put in by Pegg and her coach, Jodi Langley, paid off as she surpassed the 12-meter mark five times during the final, exceeding her previous personal best of 11.75 meters set earlier in the season. Pegg also secured a comfortable lead of 43 centimeters over the fourth-place finisher, Jihen Azaiez of Tunisia.

Pegg’s remarkable performance marked a significant milestone as she exceeded the 12-meter mark for the first time in competitive shot put. She credited her training camp experience, where she achieved a 12.50 meters throw, for boosting her confidence ahead of the final. Pegg’s achievement also made her the first field athlete from Canada to secure a medal at this year’s championships in India, joining two other Canadian athletes who had previously secured bronze medals in their respective events.

In the same competition, Uzbekistan’s Karomat Omonova set an Asian record with a gold-winning throw of 13.07 meters, while Holly Robinson of New Zealand claimed silver with a shot put of 12.86 meters, setting an Oceanic record. The F46 classification is designed for athletes with a single amputation either below or above the elbow.

Born without a radial bone in her right forearm, Pegg is currently pursuing her studies in biology and forensic science at St. Mary’s University in Halifax. Her journey in international athletics began in February 2024, where she clinched a gold medal with an 11.15-meter throw at a Grand Prix event in Dubai. Since then, Pegg has continued to make strides in her career, debuting at the Para Athletics World Championships in Kobe, Japan, where she finished fifth.

Despite her physical challenges, Pegg’s determination and resilience have propelled her towards success in shot put. Her dedication to the sport, coupled with unwavering support from her family and coaches, has been instrumental in her journey to becoming a decorated para-athlete. Pegg’s inspiring story serves as a beacon of hope for aspiring athletes facing similar obstacles, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and self-belief in achieving one’s goals.
