“Las Vegas Aces Stun Phoenix Mercury with Zone Defense in Game 1 Win”

Date:

In a strategic move, the Las Vegas Aces implemented a zone defence late in the WNBA Finals Game 1 against the Phoenix Mercury, a tactic they had not extensively practiced before. The adjustment proved effective as the zone defense helped cool down the hot-shooting Mercury, allowing the Aces to stage a comeback and secure an 89-86 victory. A’ja Wilson and Dana Evans led the charge for Las Vegas, each contributing 21 points to the win. Wilson’s 12 points in the final 14 minutes were pivotal, while a missed 3-pointer by Phoenix’s Satou Sabally in the closing seconds sealed the Aces’ win.

The Mercury struggled in the fourth quarter, making just 6 of 18 shots, including 2 of 12 from beyond the arc after shooting impressively earlier in the game. Aces coach Becky Hammon highlighted the need for a defensive change to disrupt Phoenix’s scoring rhythm and limit their penetration and outside shooting threats.

Dana Evans shined for the Aces off the bench, scoring 21 points and making history by recording five 3-pointers and four steals in a Finals game. Jewell Loyd also made significant contributions with 18 points for Las Vegas. On the Mercury side, Kahleah Cooper led with 21 points, supported by Sabally’s 19 points and Alyssa Thomas’ impressive stat line of 15 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists.

Looking ahead, Game 2 is set to take place in Las Vegas on Sunday. The closely contested Game 1 hinted at a competitive Finals series, the first best-of-seven format in WNBA history. Both teams showed resilience and determination, setting the stage for an intense battle for the championship title.
