“Lebanon-Israel Ceasefire Faces Strain as Attacks Continue”

Date:

Nearly three weeks have passed since a ceasefire brokered by the U.S. between Lebanon and Israel, but recent attacks and incursions are revealing significant flaws in an agreement that was never expected to completely stop the violence.

The ceasefire aimed to pause renewed hostilities between the two countries after Hezbollah supported Iran by firing at Israel on March 2. Subsequently, Israel invaded Lebanon in March. Despite the ceasefire announced on April 16, both sides have continued exchanging fire, leading to Israel issuing evacuation orders for several towns and villages in southern Lebanon. Notably, on Wednesday, Israel carried out airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs for the first time since the ceasefire.

Some political analysts believe the ceasefire is more symbolic, primarily serving to contain the fighting’s extent and as a diplomatic gesture rather than fully halting hostilities. The conflict between Israel and Lebanon has become an additional battleground in the broader U.S. and Israel’s campaign against Iran, with both ceasefire agreements considered fragile and at risk of collapsing.

While Tehran insists that any deal to end the wider conflict must also stop the fighting in Lebanon, the U.S. has maintained that these issues are separate. President Donald Trump has come under pressure to mediate a deal, especially in light of the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Similar ceasefire agreements elsewhere, such as in Gaza, have not succeeded in maintaining peace, with continued violence resulting in casualties. The stability of the Lebanon ceasefire is further complicated by Israel’s challenges in achieving its objectives in the region. Despite Israel’s efforts to limit threats from Hamas and Hezbollah, complete disarmament remains a daunting task.

The deep-rooted conflict between Lebanon and Israel goes beyond temporary ceasefire agreements, as the countries have been technically at war since 1948. Israel aims to permanently disarm Hezbollah, but its military operations in southern Lebanon have hindered the government’s disarmament plans.

Hezbollah has vowed to continue striking Israeli troops as long as attacks persist in the south. The group’s actions are seen as undermining Lebanon’s direct engagement with Israel. Despite entering ceasefire agreements, both sides have continued attacking each other, highlighting the challenges in enforcing truces.

To achieve lasting stability, a broader political agreement is needed. The current ceasefire in Lebanon is being utilized as a diplomatic tool by the U.S. to address the energy crisis resulting from its conflict with Iran. Efforts to rid the region of Hezbollah through disarmament may pave the way for a lasting peace deal between Israel and Lebanon.

However, achieving complete cessation of hostilities in Lebanon depends on resolving the wider regional conflict, which would increase pressure on Israel to end military actions in Lebanon. With ongoing military escalations posing a threat to Lebanon, diplomatic efforts may be essential in complementing military operations to ensure lasting peace in the region.
