Leylah Fernandez, a Canadian tennis player, began strongly but faced a tough challenge from Tereza Valentova of the Czech Republic in the Japan Women’s Open final. Fernandez, aged 23 and hailing from Laval, Quebec, swiftly won the first set in just 28 minutes. However, the 18-year-old Valentova put up a fight, extending the match to nearly two hours before Fernandez secured the victory at the Utsubo Tennis Center in Osaka.

This win marked Fernandez’s fifth career title and her second of 2025, following her previous triumph at the Washington Open earlier in the year. After the match, Fernandez expressed gratitude to her coach and father, Jorge Fernandez, along with her team and family for their unwavering support.

During the final, Fernandez showcased a strong performance with three aces, seven winners, and minimal unforced errors. She won 43 points on her serves compared to Valentova’s 31. Fernandez maintained a 70% win rate on her first serve and a 46% rate on her second serve. She successfully saved five out of nine break points, while Valentova saved nine out of 16.

Following her victory, Fernandez is set to compete in the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo against Maria Sakkari of Greece, as her initial match against Victoria Mboko from Toronto was rescheduled due to a draw update. Meanwhile, Mboko will face Bianca Andreescu from Mississauga, Ontario, in an all-Canadian first-round clash.

The Japan Women’s Open final showcased Fernandez’s resilience and skill on the court, solidifying her position as a rising star in the world of tennis.
