“Mandarin Co-Founder James Chiu Passes at 78”

Date:

James Chiu, the co-founder and president of Mandarin, who transformed a modest Brampton eatery into the most sought-after all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet chain in Ontario, has passed away. Chiu, aged 78, succumbed to pulmonary fibrosis just after celebrating his birthday. His family expressed that he maintained a positive and grateful outlook until his peaceful departure.

Recognized as a significant figure in the restaurant industry, Mandarin described Chiu as a “true restaurant icon” in a social media tribute. His emphasis on exceptional cuisine and genuine customer service is said to be a lasting inspiration for future generations.

Chiu, along with his parents, relocated from Taiwan to Montreal in 1963. After completing his business studies at Concordia University, he established his first restaurant, Sweet ‘N Sour. His family highlighted that his passion for hospitality blossomed from a mere means of survival.

In 1979, Chiu moved to Ontario with his family and co-founded Mandarin with his brother George, sister-in-law Diana, and friend K.C. Chang. Initially offering à la carte, takeout, and delivery services, the restaurant transitioned to a buffet format in response to increasing demand throughout the 1980s.

With its distinctive blue sky murals, panda-themed promotions, and renowned free Canada Day meals that drew lengthy queues, the buffet chain has expanded to 29 locations across Ontario, employing over 3,000 individuals. Over the past 40 years, Chiu and the Mandarin team have actively contributed to the community through initiatives like student scholarships and charitable support.

Throughout his career, Chiu received multiple honors, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal Award and a lifetime achievement award from the City of Brampton. He is survived by his wife, three children, and seven grandchildren, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, determination, and resilience.

Described as a vibrant and wise individual, Chiu’s family fondly recalled his wit, wisdom, and warmth. They noted his significant impact as a dedicated advocate for people and community.
