“Maple Leafs Revamp Front Office with Sundin and Chayka”

Date:

The Toronto Maple Leafs have made significant changes to their front office, introducing Mats Sundin as the senior executive adviser of hockey operations and appointing John Chayka as the general manager. These moves signal a fresh start for the franchise following a disappointing season that saw them miss the playoffs for the first time since 2016.

Sundin’s role will involve providing support across various aspects of hockey operations, emphasizing team culture, player development, and leadership. Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity, Sundin stated his commitment to helping the team, organization, and city achieve greatness. He highlighted his strong connection to the Maple Leafs and Toronto, expressing eagerness to collaborate closely with John Chayka to pursue success in Toronto.

The Maple Leafs terminated GM Brad Treliving in March amid a challenging season, where the team fell short of expectations. The organization also did not replace president Brendan Shanahan after his departure in May 2025. With the team still pursuing their first Stanley Cup since 1967, the new appointments of Sundin and Chayka come at a crucial juncture.

Both Sundin and Chayka bring unique backgrounds to their roles. Sundin, the franchise’s all-time leader in points and game-winning goals, returns to the team after a distinguished playing career. Chayka, known for his analytical approach and bold decision-making, aims to build a competitive and relentless team for the passionate Toronto fan base.

Chayka’s past includes a one-year ban in 2021 for “conduct detrimental to the league and game.” Following his resignation from the Arizona Coyotes in 2020, he faced disciplinary action for pursuing job opportunities with other teams while still under contract. As the new GM for the Maple Leafs, he is focused on delivering a winning team for the city of Toronto.

The immediate focus for the revamped front office will be assessing the future of head coach Craig Berube and evaluating the team’s core roster. With questions surrounding the team’s performance and potential roster changes, the Maple Leafs are striving to position themselves as strong contenders in the upcoming seasons.
