In a thrilling Game 5 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) on Friday, the Seattle Mariners unleashed a powerful late-game offensive surge to secure a 6-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. This win propelled the Mariners to a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series, putting the Jays on the edge of elimination as they prepare for a crucial Game 6 in Toronto on Sunday.
Kevin Gausman, the starting pitcher for the Jays, delivered a solid performance, pitching five and two-thirds innings and allowing only one run, a solo home run by Eugenio Suárez. Despite Gausman’s efforts, the Jays found themselves trailing. The momentum shifted when George Springer’s RBI double in the fifth inning tied the game, followed by Ernie Clement’s RBI single in the sixth inning that put the Jays in the lead.
Although the Jays did not hit as many home runs as in previous games, they consistently put runners on base, showcasing their offensive capabilities through multiple doubles. However, the team faced a setback when Springer exited the game in the seventh inning after being hit on the knee by a pitch.
Seattle capitalized on this opportunity in the eighth inning, with Cal Raleigh hitting a crucial solo home run off Toronto reliever Brendon Little, tying the game at 2-2. Subsequently, Little struggled with back-to-back walks before surrendering a grand slam to Suárez, extending Seattle’s lead to 6-2.
Despite their efforts, the Jays failed to mount a comeback in the ninth inning, ultimately falling short in Game 5. Mariners manager Dan Wilson praised his team’s pivotal at-bats, particularly highlighting the bases-loaded situation that led to Suárez’s grand slam.
Looking ahead, the series shifts back to Toronto for Game 6, where rookie pitcher Trey Yesavage will take the mound for the Jays. Should they secure a victory and force a Game 7, it will also take place in Toronto. The winner of the ALCS will advance to the World Series, a stage Toronto has not reached since the ’90s, while Seattle aims for its first appearance in the Fall Classic.
In another baseball highlight, the Los Angeles Dodgers completed a dominant 4-0 sweep of the National League Championship Series by defeating the Milwaukee Brewers 5-1 in Game 4, setting the stage for a thrilling World Series matchup with the victor of the ALCS.
