American rapper and singer-songwriter MGK electrified the audience at Princess Auto Stadium in Winnipeg during the halftime show of the Grey Cup on Sunday. Accompanied by his band and CFL cheerleaders, MGK, formerly known as Machine Gun Kelly, delivered a lively performance featuring a mix of his popular tracks, including “Don’t Wait Run Fast” from his latest album released this year.
The crowd welcomed MGK by lighting up their phones, creating a stunning display of lights. Sporting a football jersey, MGK did not show allegiance to either the Saskatchewan Roughriders or the Montreal Alouettes, who were competing in the game. He expressed gratitude to the audience for allowing him and his band to perform at the 112th championship game.
Before the game kicked off, the Canadian rock band Our Lady Peace entertained the spectators with a three-song set, while Manitoba country singer Catie St. Germain delivered a rendition of the national anthem. Prime Minister Mark Carney was present at the event and conducted the traditional coin toss at the center field to decide the team with the initial move, despite facing a mixed reaction from some fans in the stands.
Amidst a pre-game tailgate party outside the stadium, many fans donned Rider green attire. The game concluded with the Saskatchewan Roughriders clinching their first Grey Cup victory in 12 years, triumphing over the Montreal Alouettes with a score of 25-17. Green confetti showered the field at Princess Auto Stadium in Winnipeg, and jubilant green-and-white supporters spilled onto the streets.
This marked the Roughriders’ fifth Grey Cup win and their first since the 2013 victory in Regina.
