“Minister Takes Blame for Iran Soccer Official Entry Lapse”

Date:

Immigration Minister Lena Diab has taken responsibility for the incident involving the issuance of travel documents to senior Iranian soccer official Mehdi Taj, who has ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a recognized terrorist group in Canada. Diab clarified during a parliamentary committee session that she was not informed about the decision to grant Taj entry into the country for the FIFA World Cup gathering in Vancouver.

The Liberal government has faced scrutiny over how Taj and his delegation were allowed to travel to Canada for the FIFA Congress, which convenes more than 200 national soccer associations annually. Despite being granted documents, the delegation was denied entry upon arrival at Toronto’s Pearson Airport.

Taj, a former IRGC commander, falls under the category of inadmissible individuals to Canada as per the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, which prohibits senior Iranian government officials, including top IRGC members, from entering the country. Diab confirmed that Taj’s documents were revoked while he was en route to Canada, leading to his return to Iran.

Deputy Minister Ted Gallivan acknowledged before the committee that corrective measures are necessary to prevent such occurrences in the future. Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized that stringent protocols are in place to safeguard Canada’s borders and reiterated the prohibition against IRGC members entering the country.

The incident has sparked concerns about the efficacy of Canada’s immigration system, with critics calling for increased oversight to prevent similar lapses. Conservative immigration critic Michelle Rempel Garner criticized the decision to grant Taj entry and highlighted the need for enhanced security measures. The matter has raised questions about the screening process and the potential security risks associated with allowing individuals with ties to designated terrorist organizations into the country.

The ongoing global tensions, particularly in the Middle East, further underscore the significance of maintaining robust immigration controls. Despite the incident, FIFA President Gianni Infantino reaffirmed Iran’s participation in the upcoming World Cup matches, emphasizing the unifying power of football on a global scale.
