“Modernizing Flu Vaccines: Beyond Chicken Eggs”

Date:

For many years, the influenza vaccine has been produced in chicken eggs. Despite its long-standing success, researchers are now exploring more modern methods for developing vaccines. The process of growing the virus in eggs can lead to supply shortages and potential issues that scientists are actively addressing.

Every six months, experts from the World Health Organization gather to determine the strains to include in the upcoming flu vaccines based on prevalent strains. However, this method can be slow in adapting to the rapidly changing virus, resulting in potential mismatches between the vaccine and the circulating strain.

A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine showcased promising results for mRNA flu shots. Pfizer tested an mRNA-based flu vaccine against a traditional egg-based one and found the former to be 34% more effective. While the mRNA vaccine showed higher efficacy, it also resulted in more mild to moderate side effects.

Moving away from egg-based vaccines, cell-based vaccines grown in dog kidney cells offer a faster production process and potentially avoid issues related to bird egg cultivation. Despite the advantages, cell-based vaccines are more costly to produce. Additionally, recombinant vaccines made in insect cells provide another non-egg based option that is quicker to manufacture.

Researchers are also exploring the development of aerosolized influenza vaccines for better and longer-lasting multi-season protection. Although egg-based vaccines have been effective, ongoing research aims to enhance vaccine options for improved prevention of severe illness.

In conclusion, while egg-based vaccines have been reliable, advancements in vaccine technology offer promising alternatives for more effective and efficient flu vaccine production.
