Moscow Court Labels Pussy Riot as Extremist Group

Date:

A Moscow court has officially labeled the well-known Russian feminist punk band and art collective, Pussy Riot, as an extremist organization. This ruling, announced by the Moscow court service, comes as part of a broader crackdown on dissenting voices in Russia.

The band’s exiled members have been vocal critics of Moscow’s actions in Ukraine. In a separate legal case, the court sentenced them to jail terms of up to 13 years each for allegedly spreading false information about the Russian army. The group, previously categorized as “foreign agents” by authorities, denounced the charges as politically motivated.

By sharing the same extremist designation as the Jehovah’s Witnesses and the late opposition figure Alexei Navalny’s political organization, Pussy Riot now faces increased scrutiny from Russian authorities. This classification could also complicate the group’s interactions with Western financial institutions.

Despite the court ruling, Nadya Tolokonnikova, the founder of Pussy Riot who is currently outside of Russia for safety reasons, remains defiant. She criticized President Vladimir Putin, calling him an “aging sociopath” and expressed pride in being labeled an extremist. Tolokonnikova highlighted the attempt to erase Pussy Riot’s presence in Russia, emphasizing the severe consequences for even associating with the group.

The Kremlin justified the need for censorship, citing an alleged threat to national unity posed by external forces. While refraining from commenting on specific court decisions, the Kremlin maintains that Putin enjoys significant popularity among Russians and dismisses Pussy Riot as disconnected from mainstream opinions in the country.

State prosecutors cited past actions of Pussy Riot, including the controversial 2012 cathedral protest and the 2018 World Cup pitch invasion, as grounds for branding the group as extremist. The band’s lawyer defended their actions as satirical and not intended to incite rebellion against the state.
