Newfoundlanders Detained in Gaza Flotilla Released

Date:

A trio of Newfoundland residents who were detained by Israel while on a flotilla heading for Gaza have been released, confirmed a relative of one of the individuals. Devoney Ellis, Sadie Mees, and Nikita Stapleton were part of a group aboard the vessel named the Conscience, one of nine ships making the journey to Gaza. They were apprehended by Israeli authorities last Wednesday.

The news of their release was shared by Vicki Axford, Mees’s aunt, who expressed immense relief upon hearing that the trio is now free and in communication with their families. The three women have safely reached Jordan, as reported by the local activist group Palestine Action YYT.

Axford mentioned that the earliest possible time for their return home is early Tuesday morning. Despite the relief felt by their families, Axford emphasized that the mission the women embarked on, which was to provide aid to Palestinians, remains incomplete due to ongoing restrictions on humanitarian assistance.

Following a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, political figures in Newfoundland and Labrador collaborated with the federal government to secure the women’s release. NDP Leader Jim Dinn stressed the importance of bipartisan efforts in addressing this issue, highlighting the need for global cooperation to achieve lasting peace.

Acknowledging the international connections of the province, Dinn emphasized the role of all government levels in promoting peace. Consular officials and Federal Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand were commended by Newfoundland MP Joanne Thompson for their efforts in facilitating the release of the detainees.

The incident has sparked conversations about implementing arms embargoes with Israel, with initiatives being discussed at various governmental levels. The community’s response to the situation has also inspired individuals like Axford to advocate for change through vocal means.

The release of the Newfoundlanders signals a positive outcome in a complex geopolitical situation, with ongoing efforts to ensure continued support for peace initiatives.
