The leader of the Norwegian Nobel Committee expressed concern over the deteriorating health of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi, who is currently imprisoned in Iran. Mohammadi, known for her advocacy for women’s rights and against the death penalty, was recently hospitalized due to severe health complications, including loss of consciousness and a cardiac crisis.
The Narges Mohammadi Foundation stated that her transfer to the hospital was necessary as her condition could not be managed within the prison facility. Mohammadi, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize while in prison, experienced a suspected heart attack in March.
Updates from the foundation indicated that Mohammadi’s health remains unstable, and she requires specialized medical attention. The committee urged Iranian authorities to release her to her medical team for urgent treatment to safeguard her life.
Mohammadi was sentenced to a new prison term of seven and a half years earlier this year, prompting calls for her immediate release by the Nobel committee. Her family emphasized the critical nature of her health situation, urging for the dropping of all charges related to her human rights work.
