“Obsession” Surpasses $500M at Global Box Office

Date:

Movie enthusiasts worldwide have shown immense interest in the film “Obsession,” matching the level of fixation displayed by the movie’s deranged and lethal girlfriend. The horror flick recently achieved a significant milestone by surpassing the $500 million mark in global box office revenue, making it the first original movie of the 2020s to reach this landmark, as reported by The Wrap.

“Obsession” has outpaced Pixar’s 2023 animated feature “Elemental,” which garnered $494.6 million globally, to become the highest-grossing original film in the post-pandemic era, according to The Express Tribune. This micro-budget film, revolving around a woman consumed by violent obsession triggered when a young man selfishly makes a supernatural wish for her affections, has now become the most profitable movie made for under $1 million in the United States.

Written and directed by 26-year-old Curry Barker, “Obsession” debuted in theaters on May 15 and witnessed a rare feat similar to “E.T.” by experiencing a rise in weekly earnings during each of its initial three weeks on the big screen. By the conclusion of its theatrical run in the U.S. on August 14, the film had grossed $263.4 million domestically and an additional $238.1 million internationally, totaling over $501.5 million and still climbing, as per Box Office Mojo. A release in South Korea is anticipated, as per The Wrap.

Focus Features acquired “Obsession” following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, making it the highest-grossing festival acquisition ever. The movie’s immense commercial success has opened doors for its young cast, with lead actress Inde Navarette set to portray Rogue in Marvel’s forthcoming “X-Men” installment. Meanwhile, lead actor Michael Johnston is reportedly in discussions to star alongside Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in Universal’s new “The Mummy” movie.

The triumphant performance of “Obsession” has undoubtedly set the stage for Barker’s next venture. The filmmaker is currently working on a horror film titled “Anything but Ghosts,” in which he will also feature alongside co-writer Cooper Tomlinson, as per The Wrap.
