“Ontario Urges Flu Shots Amid Vaccine Skepticism”

Date:

Amid an increase in flu cases in Ontario and lingering vaccine skepticism, pharmacists and physicians are advocating for residents to receive flu shots.

Dr. Isaac Bogoch, an infectious diseases specialist at Toronto General Hospital, emphasized the importance of the flu shot in preventing infections, labeling the flu as a severe virus that can lead people to hospitalization.

Although the flu season is commencing in Ontario, some regions in the Southern Hemisphere have already reported higher-than-average cases for the second consecutive year.

Recent data from Public Health Ontario revealed a nearly two percent positivity rate for influenza tests between October 26 and November 1, indicating a rise from the previous week.

The agency anticipates a further increase in cases throughout November, particularly among children.

Vaccine hesitancy persists, with Sandra Hanna, CEO of the Neighbourhood Pharmacist Association of Canada, attributing this reluctance to the prolonged focus on vaccines, especially following the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Latest strain mutation may impact flu shot efficacy

A new strain of influenza A, H3N2, known for causing severe infections, is heightening concerns among individuals regarding vaccination.

Health officials warn that the latest mutation may create a mismatch with the current flu shot, potentially reducing its effectiveness.

Despite this, Dr. Bogoch reassures that even with a strain mismatch, the flu shot still offers some level of protection.

Pharmacy students from the University of Toronto will assist in administering flu shots at local pharmacies starting in November, aiming to support the increasing demand for vaccinations in easily accessible locations.

Natalie Crown, the program director, highlighted the significance of having additional support in community pharmacies during the busy flu season.

She emphasized that the involvement of pharmacy students benefits both the students, who gain practical experience, and the pharmacists, who appreciate the extra assistance.
