OpenAI is set to permit mature content, including erotica, for adult users of ChatGPT who verify their age on the platform starting in December, according to CEO Sam Altman. Altman stated that as part of the company’s approach to treating adult users as responsible individuals, they will broaden the content available to verified adults.
Acknowledging that OpenAI had initially implemented stringent restrictions on ChatGPT to address mental health concerns, Altman mentioned that these restrictions had inadvertently made the chatbot less enjoyable for users without mental health issues. However, with advancements in tools to manage mental health impacts, OpenAI is now able to ease restrictions in most cases.
Altman also disclosed that in the upcoming weeks, OpenAI will introduce a new version of ChatGPT that will empower users to customize the tone and personality of the chatbot according to their preferences. Users will have the option to make ChatGPT respond in a more human-like manner, incorporate numerous emojis, or simulate a friendly interaction.
Earlier the same day, Meta revealed enhanced restrictions for Instagram users under 18, aiming to filter out content beyond the level of a PG-13 movie. This development aligns with OpenAI’s recent introduction of parental controls for ChatGPT, following concerns raised after a teenager’s tragic suicide following interactions with the chatbot.
OpenAI is also working on an age-prediction system to estimate users’ ages based on their interactions with ChatGPT and implement appropriate restrictions for those believed to be under 18 years old.
