“Ottawa Metro Store to Become Food Basics, Workers Displaced”

Date:

A grocery store operated by Metro in Ottawa’s South Keys vicinity is set to undergo a transformation into a Food Basics outlet this autumn, leading to the displacement of numerous employees. The decision to convert the store was attributed to aligning with the area’s customer demands, as per Metro Inc. officials.

The impending closure announcement took the Southgate Metro employees by surprise, with long-time worker Justin Braganza expressing shock. The closure was explained to the staff in May by management citing financial constraints due to increased rent and profitability concerns.

Despite the transition, former Southgate Metro employees have the opportunity to apply for positions at the new Food Basics store, although the change in wage structures poses challenges for some employees like Braganza. The United Food and Commercial Workers union negotiated enhanced options for affected workers, including job opportunities and improved severance benefits.

While legal experts suggest the possibility of filing grievances over the layoffs, settlements between the union and the employer could potentially resolve the issue. However, former employees like Braganza feel marginalized and recognize the limited bargaining power they hold in such situations, lamenting the loss of their work relationships as they prepare to part ways.
