Dr. Balfour Mount, the individual who introduced the concept of “palliative care” and significantly impacted healthcare in North America with his deep compassion, passed away peacefully on September 25 at the palliative care facility named after him. He was 86 years old.
Throughout his life, Mount dedicated himself to helping others and easing their suffering. Described by his family and colleagues as profoundly empathetic, he also fiercely advocated for the dignity of those enduring hardships.
Born in Ottawa on April 14, 1939, Mount faced challenges in his education due to being a slow reader. Despite this, he persevered and graduated from Queen’s University with a medical degree, specializing in surgical urology.
Mount’s journey towards palliative care began after a personal battle with testicular cancer, prompting him to contemplate mortality. Inspired by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross’s book, “On Death and Dying,” Mount conducted a study on terminally ill patients at a Montreal hospital, revealing the inadequate pain relief and support available to them.
After training under Dame Cicely Saunders in England, the pioneer of modern hospice care, Mount recognized the importance of a comprehensive approach to alleviating pain and suffering in terminally ill patients. In 1975, he established a hospital ward for the terminally ill at the Royal Victoria Hospital and coined the term “palliative care” to better suit the Canadian context.
Mount’s legacy in palliative medicine was characterized by his compassionate care and holistic approach to treating patients. He challenged traditional beliefs in healthcare, advocating for improved end-of-life care and whole-person treatment.
Despite receiving numerous accolades and honors, Mount remained humble, attributing his greatest achievements to his family. His son, James, reflected on his father’s unwavering support and empathy, both in his professional practice and personal life.
In his final years, Mount continued to inspire others with his presence and dedication to his patients. His passing in the palliative care unit he established, surrounded by loved ones, exemplified his commitment to compassionate end-of-life care.
Dr. Balfour Mount’s enduring legacy lies not only in his medical contributions but also in the profound impact he had on those around him, embodying the essence of humanity and compassion.
