“PM Carney Dismisses MP Jivani’s Washington Visit”

Date:

Prime Minister Mark Carney has disregarded Conservative MP Jamil Jivani’s recent visit to Washington D.C., stating that Jivani’s trips won’t offer any new insights beyond what Carney already knows. Carney emphasized that the Canadian government is the sole negotiator for Canada and downplayed the significance of external visits to Washington for trade discussions.

Jivani, accompanied by fellow caucus members, embarked on his second trip to Washington this year to promote the Conservative party’s stance on Canada-U.S. trade relations. During his February visit, Jivani met with notable figures such as U.S. Vice-President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, aiming to foster cooperation between the two countries.

Carney reiterated that the Canadian government maintains robust communication channels with the U.S. administration and dismissed the idea of collaborating with Jivani on trade matters. He emphasized that despite the cordial reception by U.S. counterparts, Canada remains the primary negotiator in trade discussions.

Recent reports indicate that Jivani and Canada’s Ambassador to the U.S., Mark Wiseman, attended an event in Washington hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce in Canada. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer emphasized the “America First” policy and underscored the importance of mutually beneficial energy and minerals development between the two nations.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre refrained from commenting extensively on Jivani’s trip, highlighting the ongoing efforts of Tory MPs in advocating for tariff-free trade. Poilievre’s office confirmed the presence of a delegation, including MPs Shuvaloy Majumdar, Michael Chong, Jacob Mantle, and Corey Tochor, in Washington for discussions aimed at bolstering trade relations.

Overall, the interactions in Washington underscore the complexities of Canada-U.S. trade relations and the strategic considerations involved in navigating trade policies between the two nations.
