“Pop Mart Teams Up with Sony for Labubu Movie Franchise”

Date:

Pop Mart and Sony Pictures Entertainment have revealed plans to create a feature film based on the popular monster character, Labubu. The announcement, made in a statement by Pop Mart, signifies the company’s strategic move to expand Labubu from a collectible toy sensation into a global entertainment franchise. The film will be produced and directed by Paul King, known for his work on acclaimed movies like “Paddington” and “Wonka,” and co-written by Steven Levenson, an award-winning writer recognized for “Dear Evan Hansen.”

The upcoming film, which is currently in early stages of development, will be a combination of live-action and CGI. Labubu’s immense popularity has driven a significant increase in Pop Mart’s stock value, surpassing competitors like Hasbro, Mattel, and Sanrio. Drawing inspiration from Disney’s success, Pop Mart aims to leverage Labubu’s fame to create long-term success through various mediums such as content, theme parks, and merchandise.

Industry analysts view the partnership with Sony Pictures as a pivotal moment in Pop Mart’s efforts to diversify revenue streams, with expectations of the movie contributing to future licensing income. Kasing Lung, the creator of Labubu and The Monsters, will serve as an executive producer on the film. Currently, Pop Mart is showcasing The Monsters on a global tour to celebrate the characters’ 10th anniversary, with the latest exhibition held in Paris.
