Renowned puppeteer Sid Krofft, known for creating iconic and colorful characters on television during the 1960s and 1970s, passed away peacefully on April 10 at the age of 96 at the home of his close friend and business partner, Kelly Killian. Alongside his younger brother Marty, Krofft was the creative force behind various TV series, including their first show, “H.R. Pufnstuf,” which gained a cult following.

Describing the series as their “first baby,” Krofft and Marty brought to life the enchanting escapades of a young boy, a talking flute, and a towering six-foot dragon in “H.R. Pufnstuf.” Publicist Adam Fenton noted that Krofft, an icon in his field, cherished interacting with his dedicated fans until the very end.

Ronnie Burkett, a friend and fellow puppeteer, shared fond memories of Krofft, highlighting his enduring passion and youthful spirit. Reflecting on Krofft’s long and successful career, Burkett emphasized the importance of staying dedicated to one’s craft, noting Krofft’s continuous stream of innovative ideas well into his later years.

Krofft and Marty’s puppetry work was praised for its subversive and whimsical nature, challenging traditional norms in children’s entertainment. Burkett recalled the unconventional and campy elements present in shows like “H.R. Pufnstuf,” which offered a refreshing departure from typical educational-focused programming, opting instead for imaginative and eccentric storytelling.

Christian Jacobs, a TV producer and musician, shared his admiration for the Krofft brothers’ childlike wonder and commitment to spreading joy through entertainment. He highlighted the significance of maintaining a youthful enthusiasm in creating content for children, echoing Krofft’s infectious passion for making people smile and laugh.

Jacobs recounted a memorable encounter with Sid Krofft at a show in Los Angeles, where Krofft bestowed him with the title of “king of marionettes,” a gesture that touched Jacobs deeply. Reflecting on the experience, Jacobs expressed gratitude for the mentorship and inspiration provided by Krofft, emphasizing the timeless influence of older mentors in keeping the spirit of creativity alive in individuals.

Overall, Sid Krofft’s legacy as a visionary puppeteer and entertainer continues to inspire generations, leaving behind a colorful and imaginative imprint on the world of television and children’s entertainment.
