Rachel Homan from Ottawa is set to compete against Corryn Brown from Kamloops in the undefeated teams showdown in the women’s final at the PointsBet Invitational curling tournament in Calgary on Sunday. Homan, along with Tracy Fleury, Emma Miskew, and Sara Wilkes, secured their spot in the final by defeating Christina Black’s Halifax team 9-5 in a thrilling match on Saturday night.
During the game, Homan found herself trailing 2-1 in the fifth end but turned the tables by scoring five points with the hammer. Despite Black responding with two points in the sixth end, Homan maintained her lead by adding three more points in the seventh end. With Black only managing a single point in the eighth end, Homan sealed the victory with a handshake.
On the other hand, Brown, accompanied by Erin Pincott, Sara Koltun, and Samantha Fisher, secured their spot in the final by outplaying Kayla Skrlik from Calgary with a 10-5 win. Brown’s team took an early lead by scoring three points in the first end and continued their dominance by adding deuces in the fourth and fifth ends.
The men’s final will showcase a faceoff between Matt Dunstone and Brad Jacobs from Calgary. Jacobs, along with Marc Kennedy, Brett Gallant, and Ben Hebert, secured their spot in the final by defeating John Epping’s Toronto team 8-5. Meanwhile, Dunstone, accompanied by Colton Lott, E.J. Harnden, and Ryan Harnden, secured their spot in the final by beating Mike McEwen’s Saskatoon-based squad 9-3.
The PointsBet Invitational features 10 teams each in the men’s and women’s fields, divided into two pools. The top team from each pool will compete in the championship matches, with a total prize purse of $300,000 on the line.
