“Red Deer Shoe Renew Celebrates 70 Years of Legacy”

Wei Mah migrated to Alberta in the 1950s from China, and his establishment in Red Deer has become a long-standing feature in the local community. Seventy years later, his family business remains a significant landmark in Red Deer’s history.

“As the community expanded, he also grew, seizing the opportunity in Red Deer,” remarked Al Mah, his son and current co-owner. The family is now commemorating seven decades of service to the area while strategizing for the next 70 years.

Wei Mah, originally a cobbler in Guangzhou, opened Red Deer Shoe Renew in downtown Red Deer in 1956. His adeptness at his trade quickly garnered a loyal clientele, including RCMP members from Penhold.

Word of his exceptional craftsmanship quickly spread, particularly among customers needing cowboy boot repairs in central Alberta’s agricultural hub at the time. Wei Mah’s innovative approach to boot repair led him to source high-quality boots from Mexico and Texas, paving the way for his venture into retail.

When Wei Mah immigrated from China 70 years ago, his boots led him to becoming a central part of Red Deer, Alberta. As Lina Elsaadi reports, three generations have hammered away to keep Wei’s Western Wear open for decades.

Wei Mah’s exceptional customer service and meticulous work ethic solidified his status as a local legend. In 1995, the family expanded to a second location in the town’s north end, overseen by Al Mah.
