Brent Cehan recently retired from a 36-year career at the Toronto Public Library, looking forward to traveling and spending time with loved ones. Unfortunately, his plans were cut short as he became one of nine Canadians who succumbed to West Nile virus last year.
Cehan’s sister, Andrea Carrie, shared that his retirement celebrations, which included outdoor activities with friends at patios and High Park walks, may have been the cause of his infection. Carrie emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the virus to prevent further tragedies.
Two months before Cehan’s passing, Toronto Public Health issued a news release confirming the presence of West Nile virus in mosquitoes. The virus is transmitted through mosquito bites after they feed on infected birds’ blood, with symptoms typically appearing within two to 15 days.
In severe cases, West Nile virus can affect the central nervous system, leading to serious complications such as high fever, confusion, and even death. Vulnerable groups, including men, individuals over 50, and those with weakened immune systems, are at higher risk.
Carrie recounted the harrowing experience of her brother’s illness, from initial flu-like symptoms to his eventual hospitalization and passing. Tests revealed he had meningitis with encephalitis due to West Nile virus, exacerbated by his age and medical history.
Public Health Agency of Canada reported a total of 281 clinical cases, including nine fatalities, in 2025. Health officials stress the importance of preventive measures such as wearing protective clothing, using approved insect repellents, and eliminating standing water to reduce mosquito breeding grounds.
As the climate warms, the risk of mosquito-borne diseases like West Nile virus increases. Carrie hopes her brother’s story serves as a cautionary tale, urging Canadians to stay informed and take necessary precautions to safeguard their health during mosquito season.
