Stéphane Villeneuve, a dedicated ice rink caretaker at Parc Desnoyers in Gatineau, Quebec, is considering ending his maintenance efforts due to a disagreement with the city. Villeneuve, who is part of the non-profit group Vision Multisports Outaouais, has passionately maintained the rink, even decorating a nearby skate shack with athlete posters and sponsor advertisements that help fund his work, including providing treats like hot chocolate for skaters.
Following a meeting with city officials, Villeneuve was instructed to remove the decorations and restore the shack to its original state, citing violations of city policies. Feeling disheartened, Villeneuve expressed his disappointment, emphasizing that his efforts are for the benefit of the children who enjoy the rink.
The city initially set a deadline of October 10 for compliance, which Villeneuve deemed unreasonable. He indicated that he may cease his maintenance activities if the city upholds its demands. MP Steven MacKinnon has voiced support for Villeneuve, urging the city to find a resolution and not hinder the cherished community asset.
Councillor Daniel Champagne has also expressed a desire to resolve the situation amicably, emphasizing the importance of keeping the rink operational. In response to the controversy, the City of Gatineau emphasized the need for adherence to safety standards and municipal branding guidelines, which prohibit sponsorships in city facilities without prior authorization.
While the city requested prompt action from Villeneuve, recognizing the challenges of immediate compliance, it has now extended the timeline for adjustments to be made gradually until the winter of 2026-27, acknowledging the value of the rink and the efforts of non-profit groups like Vision Multisports Outaouais in maintaining community spaces.
