RJ Barrett Embraces Role Evolution Amid Trade Rumors

Date:

RJ Barrett remains unfazed by the changing dynamics of his role on the Toronto Raptors and the swirling trade speculations surrounding him. Hailing from Mississauga, Ont., Barrett showcased his scoring prowess by leading the Raptors with an average of 21.1 points per game during the 2024-25 season, coupled with 5.4 assists per game over 58 appearances. However, the addition of former NBA star Brandon Ingram to the team and the return of all starters in good health as the Raptors’ training camp progresses suggest that Barrett’s responsibilities on the court are likely to evolve.

Amidst talks of a potential trade due to his remaining two seasons on the current contract, Barrett addressed questions about adapting to his fluctuating role and the trade rumors during Raptors media day. Expressing his versatile skill set, Barrett emphasized his ability to contribute across various aspects of the game as a key strength. Anticipating growth and improvements in his game from the previous year, Barrett conveyed his eagerness for the upcoming challenges to enhance his performance and become a more well-rounded, impactful player.

Toronto is presently conducting its training camp at the University of Calgary, culminating in an open practice session at Jack Simpson Gym on Friday. The Raptors’ preseason debut is scheduled for October 6 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver against the Denver Nuggets. In the previous season, Barrett and center Jakob Poeltl shouldered significant offensive responsibilities for the team, largely due to injuries sidelining Scottie Barnes and Immanuel Quickley. Notably, Barrett led the team with a 28.7 usage percentage in the 2024-25 season, reflecting his integral role in team plays.

With Barnes and Quickley returning to full fitness at the start of the preseason, and the inclusion of Ingram, who was acquired from New Orleans before the previous season’s trade deadline but was yet to debut for the Raptors due to an ankle injury, the dynamics of the Raptors’ gameplay are set to shift. Acknowledging the impact of Ingram’s presence, Barrett emphasized the team’s collective goal of winning and adapting to playing alongside talented teammates.

General manager Bobby Webster, now overseeing basketball operations for Toronto, discussed Barrett’s role for the upcoming season in light of Ingram’s arrival and ongoing trade talks. Webster highlighted Barrett’s evolving efficiency, particularly in catch-and-shoot scenarios and drawing fouls, anticipating a decrease in the defensive attention he faces. Emphasizing Barrett’s prowess in attacking the rim and the importance of defensive contributions, Webster underscored the value Barrett brings to the team with continued growth and efficiency.
