In a significant nighttime assault, Russia targeted civilian infrastructure in Ukraine with drones, missiles, and guided aerial bombs, resulting in the deaths of at least five civilians. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy disclosed that over 50 ballistic missiles and around 500 drones were deployed in nine regions of Ukraine during the attack.
Among the casualties was a 15-year-old, along with three others, who were killed in Lviv due to a joint drone and missile strike. The city, known for its historical significance and as a refuge from the conflict, suffered power outages in two districts while public transportation was briefly halted. The strike also caused a civilian business complex on Lviv’s outskirts to catch fire.
In another incident, a woman lost her life, and nine others were injured, including a 16-year-old girl, in Zaporizhzhia as a result of a nighttime aerial assault using drones and guided aerial bombs. The attack left residential buildings destroyed and plunged approximately 73,000 households in Zaporizhzhia and nearby areas into darkness.
In Sloviansk, six individuals, including a child, sustained injuries when a Russian guided aerial bomb struck an apartment block, damaging numerous residential buildings, cars, shops, and a café. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy reiterated the urgent need for additional air defenses from Western allies to counter Russia’s relentless “aerial terror.”
Meanwhile, Ukraine has been conducting its own long-range strikes on Russia, primarily targeting Moscow’s oil infrastructure, leading to ongoing fuel shortages. The Kremlin has intensified attacks on Ukraine’s power grid in preparation for winter, a tactic employed since the full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022. Additionally, Moscow has increased airstrikes on Ukraine’s railway network, crucial for military logistics, with recent strikes hitting a railway station in Shostka, resulting in casualties.
The escalation of violence underscores the urgent need for international intervention to address the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
