As the ongoing Canada Post strike enters its second week, there is a rising worry for a particular subset of Canadians who heavily depend on the postal service — senior citizens.
Jane Stallabrass, a program facilitator at Abbotsford Seniors Centre in Ottawa’s Glebe neighborhood, highlighted the significance of home delivery for seniors, mentioning that around 10 to 15 percent of the center’s clients rely on postal services for various deliveries, making the postal worker’s visit a crucial point of contact for them.
Judy Rock, an 84-year-old individual, shared her experience of feeling isolated and abandoned due to the strike. She emphasized that for some seniors, accessing a community mailbox can be extremely challenging, particularly during harsh winter conditions.
The postal workers not only deliver packages but also serve as a lifeline for many seniors along their routes. Stallabrass mentioned instances where Canada Post employees have expressed concerns about individuals during their deliveries, triggering follow-up wellness checks to ensure the seniors’ well-being.
The strike was initiated by the union representing Canada’s postal workers following significant reforms imposed on Canada Post by the federal government. The postal service has been facing financial challenges, with substantial losses reported in recent years despite government support.
Despite the disruptions caused by the strike, many seniors have adapted to the changing landscape by embracing technology for communication and bill payments. This shift was accelerated by the pandemic, pushing seniors to become more tech-savvy than ever before.
While some seniors have seamlessly transitioned to online payment methods, others face challenges due to a lack of technological knowledge. Beryl McKale, an 81-year-old, acknowledged the evolving landscape and the necessity of progress in postal services to ensure sustainability in the long run.
The strike’s impact on seniors, who rely heavily on postal services for communication and vital deliveries, underscores the need for a balanced approach that considers the unique needs of this demographic amid the ongoing labor dispute.
