Canada’s Sophia Jensen clinched the silver medal in the women’s canoe single 500-metre event at the inaugural canoe sprint World Cup event held in Szeged, Hungary. Hailing from Chelsea, Quebec, Jensen completed the race in 1 minute 59.75 seconds, securing second place behind China’s Olympic doubles champion, Sun Mengya, who finished in 1 minute 59.00 seconds. Csofia Cscorba delighted the home crowd by capturing the bronze medal with a time of 2 minutes 2.54 seconds.
Jensen is part of the six-member Canadian Olympic team competing in the World Cup series this season, alongside Katie Vincent, Sloan MacKenzie, Connor Fitzpatrick, Michelle Russell, and Riley Melanson. Joining the national team in 2017, Jensen made her Olympic debut at the 2024 Paris Games. The 24-year-old athlete had previously won a silver medal at the world championships in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, in the C-1 500m event in 2022.
The World Cup season will progress to Brandenburg, Germany, on May 14, with Montreal hosting the next stop from July 9-12.
