Tourism businesses nationwide will have a positive recollection of the summer of 2025, as tourist spending hit an all-time peak. The tourism industry in Canada generated a historic revenue of $59 billion between May and August, marking a six percent increase from the same period last year. The only setback was a slight decline in revenue from American visitors, dropping by 1.7 percent.
The surge in revenue was largely driven by Canadian travelers opting to spend their vacation budgets within the country, with domestic tourism seeing a seven percent increase. Revenue from international tourists remained robust, especially from overseas markets, which experienced a 10 percent uptick, as per the latest data released by Destination Canada.
During the spring, the national tourism organization observed a growing interest among travelers to explore various regions of Canada. Joe Amati, a senior executive director at Destination Canada, noted a positive trend in bookings from both international markets and domestic Canadian travelers. He expressed cautious optimism that the momentum seen during the summer would persist, with travelers expressing a strong desire to visit Canada.
Hotels experienced high occupancy rates during the summer months, peaking in August at 80.7 percent, the highest level since 2014. Andrew Shepherd, the general manager of the Malcolm Hotel in Canmore, Alberta, highlighted the awe-inspiring beauty of the Rocky Mountains that captivated international and American guests visiting the region.
Brent Koinberg, the owner of Crowsnest Adventures in southwest Alberta, remarked on the exceptional summer tourism season with a significant increase in bookings and customers, including a substantial portion from international travelers. The positive tourism trend was reflected across various regions in Canada, with Atlantic Canada showing some of the most significant growth rates.
Overall, the summer of 2025 exceeded expectations for many tourism operators and businesses, showcasing a promising outlook for the industry in the coming years.
