“Summer Safety Warning: Prioritize Water Safety”

Date:

Following a series of drowning incidents during Europe’s unprecedented heatwave, advocates are advising Canadians to prioritize safety this summer while also advocating for increased public swimming access nationwide.

France’s prime minister disclosed that 40 individuals drowned in a short span as they sought relief from temperatures surpassing 40 C, with similar reports emerging from Germany during the heatwave.

Canada is bracing for its own heatwave this week, with parts of Ontario and Quebec set to experience temperatures in the mid-30s.

Lenea Grace, the executive director of the Lifesaving Society of BC & Yukon, emphasized the hidden dangers in bodies of water like currents, undertows, and submerged logs that may not be apparent at first glance.

Grace cautioned against assuming swimming proficiency in controlled environments like pools automatically translates to open water bodies with potential hazards like currents or tides.

As of June 29, there have been 92 drowning incidents in Canada this year, slightly lower than the same period last year, although figures have risen notably in British Columbia and Ontario.

Grace recommended selecting swimming locations with lifeguards whenever feasible or opting for areas with other swimmers around. She also stressed the importance of caregivers keeping a close watch on young children and advised individuals lacking swimming skills or boaters to wear life jackets.

Advocating for Safer Water Access

The borough mayor of Verdun in Montreal called for enhanced secure access points to water bodies following the drowning of an 18-year-old earlier this month, marking the fourth such incident near Verdun Beach in just over a year.

Céline-Audrey Beauregard highlighted the lack of awareness about water environments among the public during hot weather, leading to potentially dangerous situations.

Gregary Ford, the vice-president of Swim Drink Fish, an organization promoting clean and safe water bodies, noted that heatwaves prompt many individuals to seek outdoor activities, including swimming in public waters for the first time.
